Effie and Avis Hotchkiss were daring pioneers. On an epic cross country trip made in 1915, on a new Harley Davidson with side car, this mother and daughter duo became the first women to take a motorcycle from coast to coast.
Emily Post wasn't quite as daring. Still, in the summer of 1915 she too made a trip west to California. Her epic adventure was published as a popular travel guide of the era and inspired countless roadtrips. In that same summer Edsel Ford and his friends from college drove west to California. It was an odyssey worthy of Jason and the Argonauts.
This tsunami of cross country road trips came just 14 years after pioneering automobile manufacturer Alexander Winton set out on an ill fated attempt to be the first person to drive from coast to coast.

Today's program is sponsored in part by RouteTrip USA, the bespoke road trip specialists for a holiday in the US or Canada.
