Mohave County is one of the orginal counties in Arizona. And it is one of the largest counties in the United States. So, it is not surprising that it has such a diverse array of attractions.
The world's only electric vehicle museum. More than 100 miles of scenic, picturesque Route 66. Ghost towns. The pine forested oasis of Hualapai Mountain Park. An eclectic array of museums, restaurants, and shops in historic towns, near ghost towns, and vibrant towns on the Colorado River. Festivals, award winning microbreweries, and an amazing distillery famous world wide for its agave rum.
These are just a few of the things that make Mohave County a destination. And these are some of the places shared on today's episode of Coffee With Jim sponsored in part by Visit Tucumcari, Roadrunner Lodge, RouteTrip USA and Uranus Fudge Company and General Store.

On today's program America's storyteller shares a bit of the history of McLean, Texas (did you know that there was direct connection to the sinking of the Titanic?). And we visit with Nolan Stolz who has been delving deep into the history of forgotten and even vanished towns along Route 66, and historic theatres.
As our theme song by The Road Crew says, come along for the ride. It's road trip inspiration, obscure history, trivia, and the story of America. This is Jim Hinckley's America.

Effie and Avis Hotchkiss were daring pioneers. On an epic cross country trip made in 1915, on a new Harley Davidson with side car, this mother and daughter duo became the first women to take a motorcycle from coast to coast.
Emily Post wasn't quite as daring. Still, in the summer of 1915 she too made a trip west to California. Her epic adventure was published as a popular travel guide of the era and inspired countless roadtrips. In that same summer Edsel Ford and his friends from college drove west to California. It was an odyssey worthy of Jason and the Argonauts.
This tsunami of cross country road trips came just 14 years after pioneering automobile manufacturer Alexander Winton set out on an ill fated attempt to be the first person to drive from coast to coast.
On today's episode of Coffee With Jim, America's storyteller talks epic road trips made at a time when stagecoaches were still plying the roads in the southwest.

It lasted less than five minutes. But the story of the shootout at the Blevins house is an epic legend in the annals of territorial Arizona history. Dating to 1881, the Higgins House has served as a hospital, a boarding house, a hotel, a motel complex, a saloon, and as the Masonic Lodge. The Navajo County Courthouse is linked to a darkly comedic tale of frontier era justice.
On today's program America's storyteller author Jim Hinckley tells the story of Holbrook, Arizona. Telling people where to go, and sharing America's story, it's what we do at Jim HInckley's America.

She ran houses of ill repute in mining towns but her legendary displays of generosity made her a celebrity of sorts in the Arizona territory. So, her brutal and senseless murder, the lengthy trial, and the appeals that went as far as President Roosevelt garnered headlines throughout the country. So did the hanging, the only one to take place on the grounds of the Mohave County courthouse.
In the first episode of Coffee With Jim for 2023, America's storyteller shares this story, and the fascinating history of the territorial era jail that still stands in the shadow of the stately Mohave County Courthouse built in 1914.

Contrary to what was said in the beginning of the program, it is 2022 NOT 2023. Does that give a hint as to how today's program went?
Our guest on the program, Cort Stevens of CD Showcase and Old Cars Strong Hearts, notified me yesterday that he was under the weather. We will be hoping for a speedy recovery and a good report soon.
So, on today's program America's storyteller answered questions fom listeners and fans of Jim Hinckley's America. It is a fun filled and fascinating discussion about road trips, time capsules, the trails and tribulations of being an author, and, hopefully, a bit of road trip inspiration.
Today's programis sponsored in part by Visit Tucumcari and RouteTrip USA.
