Sarah Winnemucca was fearless. She was tenacious. She tirelessly worked to get better treatment for the Paiute and other tribes, and to get tribes to embrace the education needed for them to adapt to the new world and survive.
Her exploits were legendary. As an example, in 1878, she worked as a messenger, scout and interpreter for General O. O. Howard during the Bannock War. She later said, quote, “This was the hardest work I ever did for the government in all my life … having been in the saddle night and day; distance, about two hundred and twenty-three miles. Yes, I went for the government when the officers could not get an Indian man or a white man to go for love or money. I, only an Indian woman, went and saved my people.” Her courageous actions landed her on the front page of The New York Times and made her the subject of dime novels.

Good morning, everyone! This morning’s inspirational story about Phineas Gage is so amazing that it was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. But just as with many tales of inspiration, the story of Phineas Gage is also a tale of tragedy.
In 1852, 29-year-old Phineas Gage was working in Chile as a stagecoach driver. Four years earlier he had been employed as a powder man for a railroad construction project when an accident transformed his life and made medical history.

War is a horrid affair. No one involved walks away unscarred. No one walks away without a story. But rarely is a story more amazing than that of Jacob Miller.
Miller served in Company K of the 9th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He valiantly fought in the battles of Greenbriar, West Virginia; the siege of Corinth; Perryville, Kentucky; and Stones River. On September 19, 1863, during the bloody battle of Chickamauga, it looked like his luck had run out.

This morning, on the last of our Christmas programs for 2021, author Jim Hinckley shares two inspirational but tragic and somber stories about a shared Christmas in the midst of war. The first story is from the trenches in WWI. And the second is the tale of a family of impoverished refugees who risked treason to give American and German soldiers a taster of Christmas during the Battle of the Bulge.
This mornings program is sponsored in part by the memory making road trip specialists at RouteTrip USA, the delightful and almost magical town of Tucumcari, New Mexico, and the wonderful time capsule that is Roadrunner Lodge.

It is the story of an American icon that begins on Christmas day, 1878. As was the case with many automotive pioneers and even the Wright Brothers, he began his career with bicycle repair and racing. But for a time he took it a step further and manufactured bicycles under the Frontenac name.
His career included work as a mechanic for Fiat, a founding member of Buick's factory racing team, and the manufacturer of high performance parts for the Model T Ford. He was Louis Chevrolet.
